Biography: Steve Bennett has been in private practice since 1978. He graduated from the
University of Oregon in 1975, with a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science. His
practice emphasizes estate planning, wills, trusts, probate, trust administration,
and contested estates. He also has broad expertise in a wide variety of related
matters, including real estate, business contracts, tax planning, shareholder
transactions and disputes, corporate law, and tax deferred exchanges.
Mr. Bennett has molded his practice in order to serve both individuals and
business clients. With over 28 years of experience, he has developed
considerable expertise in business law, real estate, probate, and estate planning.
He draws on this experience in taking a positive approach to helping clients
achieve their goals.
Mr. Bennett's estate planning practice includes planning for the distribution of an
individual's property at his or her death, including life insurance benefits. He has
particular expertise in estate planning matters involving state and federal income
taxes, and gift and estate taxes. Over the years Mr. Bennett has prepared a wide
variety of wills, trusts, and related estate planning documents for his many clients.
In the probate arena, Mr. Bennett has extensive experience in assisting clients
and their families with the probate process. Probate is the legal procedure by which the debts of a deceased person are paid, and assets of the decedent are
collected, valued, and distributed to the decedent's beneficiaries. Individual state
laws direct the probate court how to distribute the decedent's estate, but a person
may "override" many of these laws by signing a legally valid will and by using
other estate planning tools. State laws and procedures vary greatly, so it is
important to consult a qualified attorney to ensure that the decedent's assets are
distributed correctly.
Mr. Bennett's outside interests include skiing, snowboarding, triathlons, running,
golf, sailing, and other outdoor activities.
